There have been some strange things...

... going on in the studio this past week, and I've twice emptied the recycle bin.  It's a very big one too.

Boxes and boxes of old photos have been disassembled, sorted and earmarked for family, dating back to my grandparents' time (and they were born in the late 1800's).  What a job!

In the process, I found some really pretty folios like this one, among other things.  Now I've got a file of background jpegs that are out of this world (and from a previous one).

If you've got any suggestions as to what to do with some 500+ old and/or vintage photos, I'd love to hear about them.  Ideas that will eliminate, and make useful, all of them at once would be golden!

To counteract all that grey, brown, black and white, I made a little book to house some of my favourite tags.  It was such fun to make and I learned so much that I can see some more appearing faintly on the horizon.

Between the frou-frou hat and the fancy belt, I think she looks pretty swank, don't you?

Here's to a beutifully creative week for you, and if you have an outstanding idea for those photos, I'd love to hear it in the comments.

  1. Hi Win, I could not throw those photos away. Could you use them in a collage, think I would have to make them into a Masterboard then scan and maybe recolour them to use on cards. Some time ago we gave an old coffee table to a young couple just starting in their new home, he rubbed it down and attached family photos to the top, varnished everything and added a glass top, it looked brilliant. I am loving the tag holder too. I love making tags but then can't decide what to do with them so this is a great idea. P.S. Daisy and Alfie are having their afternoon nap right now so peaceful for a while! Hugs Angela xXx

    1. I'm definitely struggling with the photos...some of them are from the 1800's. I will certainly scan those that are most interesting. I love the coffee table idea, and perhaps I could suggest it to a cousin or son-in-law who may be interested in that kind of a project.

The tag holder was fun to create, and I'm loving the chaotic ribbon top look...it's a great addition to my bookshelf, I must say!

Please wish Daisy and Alfie happy snoozes! 🐶🐶

  2. Hi Win, I think Felix had some great ideas and I would do that with photos I didn't especially want to keep forever.
Being a genealogy lover myself, I have many photo's too. The portrait and important ones I want to keep I label on the back with an indelible fine point black pen Who they are and the date or approximate date and location if you know it. I store them in two stackable closable plastic 13"x13"x3"containers labeled with my family and another for my husbands family. So you can look through them. I don't use photo albums any more because the get old and fall apart and mess up your photos. They also take up a lot of room.
I love your little books, they are so cute, and with your tags coming out of the top they look like a party.
Have a wonderful March, my friend. Best wishes and hugs to you.

    1. I agree about those ideas from Felix for photos, Deann.

It's amazing how they can multiply, isn't it? I inherited the whole family's photos from my grandparents on my Mom's side (only a few of which are labelled in any way), and many from my paternal grandparent's side as well. Now that I've removed 99% of them from the albums, the sheer volume is amazing.

Another local artist (below) has suggested that some could go to the local collage group, which would be helpful, and I've some ideas niggling (well, banging, really) at the back of my head for books to make, so that will take care of some of them once I finish my current projects. Can you see me laughing hysterically???!!!

Mappy March to you and yours, as well, Deann - here to a terrific spring into Easter! xo

  3. We have a collage group at ArtSpace now Win. Perhaps some of our group would like some old photos. Would you think of us before you trash them?

    1. That's good to hear, and I definitely will do. There's little doubt there is enough to go around for everyone!

  4. I want to troll your bin... but hope it's more empty once I eventually get there!! Do I need more stuff? NO. Do I want more stuff? YES. sigh.

  5. Love the tag book. It is so happy with its riot of rainbow ribbons.
And what a lot of recycling you've been doing, and still more when you use up those photos. It's hard to get rid of them, isn't it? But when they haven't been labelled and you don't have a clue who they are... Maybe you can put them together as scrap packs for crafters or use them as the base for the bookmarks your group makes for the library. I'm sure there are lots of uses for them, but it's Saturday evening and my brain is closing down :)

    1. Scrap packs and bookmark bases are both great ideas. Your brain works like gangbusters even when you're shutting down for the night. 🤣
