It's drip, drip, drool...

...in the studio this week as I do some more playing with the plastic wrap technique.

I was stunned, sheepish and downright disturbed (yup, more than usual!) to see that I'd not yet done a video on the technique, so that was part of my week as well.  And the editing elves returned from vacation,to ensure it was both edited and uploaded to YouTube.  Check out the process tutorial - it's very short, and give my channel some love while you're there please!  And who doesn't love playing with ArtFoamies on a background?!!!

This technique is one of the most versatile ones for a background, and can be subtle or sassy - it's your choice.

You can do it layer by layer or do several colours at once.  I did a triple layer one this week (wrapped/dried in between the layers of quinacridone yellow, quinacridone red-orange and quinacridone burnt orange):

First and second layer

Third layer
Same method, three layers with drying time for each

Some softer examples that utilize the granular properties of some paints:

What's your favourite background technique? Let me know in the comments below and perhaps we can trade secrets!

  1. I love what you have made with the background of the technique video! And the triple layered backgrounds look super as well!

My favourite technique since a few months is just gluing bits and pieces on and put on some gesso and acrylic color or stamp on it ... often chaotic results but handy to have ready when it comes to create a page for a certain theme in my journals.

    Big hugs!

    1. Thanks, Susi - that was great fun, and while still in progress, coming up roses (or flowers anyway). You and Laura (comment just below) need to connect as that is a favourite technique of hers as well!

  3. I love that subtle grey one, Win. It is like frost on a window or ice on a pond. But then, of course, I also love the brightly coloured one you did in the video.
I think my favourite background technique depends on the week :) I'll go mad doing a whole heap of stuff and then move on to something else.

  4. These are super Win. I,too, like the soft grey piece as it is subtle and I can see it with a colourful overlay. I don't really have a favourite technique but have, on occasion, dropped another surface on top of the first which is loaded with paint. I press them together and twist the top piece. This gives me two background with interesting swirls and other designs - a suprise most of the time!

    1. Ahhhhh, the ubiquitous 'smoosh' technique, Val - another favourite of mine! :D Because one can't control it, it's the perfect one for those of us, myself included, who get into perfectionism!

    1. Thanks, Jackie - it's a favourite technique of mine, as much for the colour as the unpredictability of the results. Enjoy the video, and have a fantabulous weekend in your autumn-colourful part of the world! xo

  6. Another background feast! Well, I know where I'm going with that awesome green one...but my favorite background technique is whatever works with what I'm doing at the moment a little bit of rust, gears, quilts, flowers mixed together. Win's fabulous curtains, backgrounds and wool scraps are the best. My most often used is the sky because it gives so much perspective to the picture, it's what God uses so how can I go wrong with that.
It is rapidly spiraling down into winter here. Autumn my favorite time of year, mellow and beautiful warmth with the chill breeze promise of Winter. I wish you the best Autumn sweet like a crisp apple and glowing like a jack o lanterns smile...hugs

    1. I'll be watching for your use of these backgrounds, Deann. And yes, we're in the midst of a gorgeous autumn here as well - lush colour, texture and with the line of tree trunks starting to be seen as well. Sending you happy fall thoughts (and Thanksgiving ones, too, since it's our holiday weekend here). Big hugs, Win xo

    1. Thanks, Sim - I lOVE it that you love the orange and the green one. Years ago, when asked in a colour class what combination I hated, it was orange and green. Now they are two of my most favourite combinations. :D
