Well, the case...

...is closed.  After a week and a half of smelling like a forest of eucalyptus and sounding like a bob of seals (that's one of the words to call a group of those delightful creatures - isn't that perfect?), I'm finally on the finish line of this nasty cold.  That means that I could return to the studio and finish the slip case for the second star book.

Somehow these books cry out for a holding cell, and as any good murder mystery aficionado knows, it's not over until the culprit is contained.

Of course, I've been managing to get into the studio for short blocks over the period, so the black and white journal got two more spreads as I near the finish line there.  It's so stuffed with additions that I doubt a case will ever contain it, though.  It's akin to a bursting stomach after a pot luck dinner with family.

I've had a couple of experimental pieces on the go, too, and I keep throwing layers at them.  While they're mostly pretty ugly, they do have some interesting bits in them, so I'll be playing further to see what may come of the combination of paint, stencils, Kroma crackle (man, that takes forever to dry and I'm so not a patient person) and glass beads.

I'm heading out into the blogsphere now to see what you've all been up to...it's certain to be much better than an end-of-winter cold.  Here's to sunshine and blue skies for us all!

  1. Oh, that slipcase is perfect for your beautiful star book. And the crackle is so worth the wait for it to dry - it adds a gorgeous texture to those pages.
Sorry to hear you've been unwell. Your mention of eucalyptus reminded me of last week when we had a heavy shower and the smell of the trees afterwards was lovely.

    1. Thanks, Tracy, I'm pleased that it works so well. As for the crackle, I use it again and again, knowing that I'll be impatient every time, but delighted with the results.

I'm envious of your post-shower eucalyptus heaven, I must say. I'll bet you basked in the midst of it with great delight!

  2. Ohlala! Even with a cold and sick you continue to be creative! Hats off my friend!!
The case for the star book is magnificent, so in harmony with the tips matching the branches of the star and the colours in unison.
And the new pages of the black book are breathtaking! Does it really need a holster? Maybe a nice box would suffice?
Finally, the textures you are experimenting with are to die for my friend. Worth the patience for drying IMHO.
Welcome back to the web, I'm glad you left the herd of seals... Hahaha!
(And many thanks for your many comments Win, always so intelligent, searched and laudatory :)

    1. Thanks, Sim; I do love it that there is always something to do as an artist, even if it's a quiet something to match one's energy levels!

I'm having a giggle about a box for the black and white journal - I'll have to give you a photo on next week's post so you can see the shape. It will make you laugh, too, as you work out how one could create a shaped box for it. 🤣

Such a delight, always to see your comments, Sim - many thanks, my friend. xo

  3. It's sad that we live in a time, that when a friend drops off the radar for a week we start to seriously worry about them. I was getting ready to call in the Mounties. Sorry you were sick I hope you are feeling much better.
Your artwork hasn't suffered any though it is all still fabulous.
And I am still down here dodging variants and cursing Putin.

Take way better care of you, and have a wonderful week my friend. Hugs

    1. I agree that the times are worrisome, Deann...it makes one wonder about every little blip in our friends' radar, right? Calling in the mounties had me smiling, given that a friend across the compound hadn't noticed her phone was out for three days. She had two RCMP come to the door for a wellness check, as both her children (one in Alaska and one in California) had called about her. So we know they'll come if you call. 😅

Keep safe, my friend (you and your family), dodge those variants and curse that misguided Putin to the max.

  4. Oh my! Winny, I so love Star books though not made any for ages and the Slip case is such a brilliant idea. Sorry to hear you've been under the weather too but pleased you're feeling better. However I am feeling guilty seeing how brilliant you are with that black journal book. I have one of those and just haven't even started one page in it....I am a bad girl for sure! and if that's not enough the Kroma crackle has sat in the drawer for years. I'm thinking I need to stop buying and use up what I've got as even if I started I could never use up everything and some of it might not even still be any good....oh my I am more than bad! I am wondering what surface you are using for this. Any way you take care lovely lady and sending big hugs, Angela xxx

    1. I particularly like this method of the star book given that it allows beads to be incorporated on the spine, which is not the case for the forms that are glued together rather than sewn.

Oh, I'm going to be hounding you for a start on that black journal...they are so much fun to do that you'll be immediately addicted to it. And ditto for the Kroma crackle, although you'll need your Extreme Patience Hat when working with it. That particularly substrate was watercolour paper, although the crackle layer was on top of some stencilled molding paste so it didn't seep through. Kroma is quite moist, and works best on a wooden substrate.

Big hugs right back at you, Angela - we really need to get together and play sometime!! You may have to plan a trip to Canada!
