When the muse...

...is fallow/dormant/inert out to lunch, I head back into my black and white journal.  Because it's a small size and I occasionally store some sketchy ideas there, it's a good working ground.  Started sometime in the fall of 2019, I expect it to be finished during the next pandemic if my present rate is any indication.

I have done a few pages, though, and thought I'd share them here.

And of course there is always something (else) on the go in the studio.

I've been playing with the chopped off ends of papers (yes, I save everything), but judging from the pile, there's a lot to do yet.  I've got a project in mind for the paper above, and right now it's resting under a stack of books while the glue sets.

And of course there is another book form in progress; I still have several thousand styles to test.  These signatures need punching and setting into an accordion file.

All in all, there's more than enough to keep me busy as we wait for the roads to open from the west coast and supply lines to resume.  This is some interesting year, isn't it?

Stay safe, my friends, and keep in touch.

  1. I always love seeing your creativity in your black journal - so many lovely colours, and of course I love the circles :)
Those papers are a bit like a log cabin quilt, which was also a way of using up those little scraps. I have to admit that I don't keep every little bit of scrap. It has to really appeal to me to keep a strip, small square, or tiny scrap. Otherwise it goes into the bin, which is tiny and emptied regularly.
Sending you hugs as you wait for the clean-up to be finished. Take care, my friend.

    1. Who wouldn't love circles? I just can't imagine! ;-)

I'm driving myself crazy by trying to use up every bit of paper...that eco mind can be a nasty friend. :D

Thanks for checking in on us via email...it's so nice to know that people around the world are watching out for each other. xo

    2. When I say the bin, I mean the recycling bin, so I still feel eco-friendly :)

    3. I knew that was the case, Tracy - can't imagine you just pitching them into the garbage. ;-)

  2. With your love of colour, it is interesting you head to your black and white book to get inspiration flowing again and it does by adding bits of colour to those b & w pages. I do like that orange and turquoise patchwork paper too!

    1. I'm right there with you on the circles, Laura. And there are times when I wish I could be happy with just recycling pieces...my addiction to paper-painting really can get out of hand. :D

  4. Always a busy lady for sure. Not sure what's been going on at your, sounds like you've had some bad weather maybe. Loving your journal pages and the paper strips have been one of my favourite techniques recently they can make great cards. Have a lovely creative week, Angela xXx

    1. There has been some horrendous flooding on the west coast, Angela, and while it is some seven hours driving from here, it has closed all the roads to the interior of BC where we are, and it will be some time before they reopen. The area most affected is the equivalent of western Canada's bread basket.

Ha! I'm having a grin about the paper strips - I knew I'd seen them somewhere in my blog travels, and it was at your home. You're are so lovely when made into cards; they're much quieter than mine by a long shot. I'm working on a small collage painting with them, and really enjoying the process!

Happy week right back to you, Angela - may your muse keep you flying with fun!

  5. Aaaah, I enjoy enlarging each thumbnail one by one and observing them for a while, the colors (because there is not, of course, only black and white :), the textures, the shapes and anything your creative mind can imagine, try and recycle. It's crazy! And you have a very good taste, which does not spoil anything! I am very happy to know you my friend. When your muse is having lunch, his battalion of assistants invades your workshop: D! I hope that your supply routes will open up very quickly and that you stay warm on your adventures.

    1. Oh, thanks so much, Sim - I love it when people really take the time to look (and isn't that what being an artist is all about?). I've been an acute observer all my life so your zooming in really is so my kind of thing! You are such a delight and I look forward to your comments each week, as well as your posts...your own creativity and muse knows no bounds! xo

  6. I love your Black & White Journal, it's one of my favorites of your projects. I adore the way black just sets everything off and these examples are wonderful.
As far as your other project goes you make me feel so guilty...lol
I have a bunch of paper strips like that, but they're in my garbage can.
Hopefully shipping will open up for you soon so you can carry on. It could be worse however down here it's toilet paper.
Myself I'm busy getting all stressed for Thanksgiving. The whole family plus one are coming for dinner. Egad I'm getting too old for this.
Keep warm and stay cool...your the best. Hugs Deann

    1. That's so kind of you to say, Deann...it's definitely a favourite of mine as well. I love the way the colour pops on the black, and the small size means that a project doesn't have to go on forever! :D

I so understand about the Thanksgiving stress...it's a ton of work to get ready for it, and then it's over and done and clean up happens. Every year I say that it's time for the younger ones to take over, but then I take it on anyway. We must be nuts, my friend. xo
