This little vase measures about 3 inches in height (sans flower). With the tail included, it's about five inches wide.
Created from a piece of painted cheesecloth (you'll find the tutorial video just below) it has been stiffened with Golden GAC400. While wet, I wrapped the cheesecloth around a small plastic bottle which had been liberally (and I do mean liberally coated with Vaseline).
I let the GAC-stiffened cheesecloth dry overnight and then used my palette knife to free the bottle from the vase. Both survived, although the bottle will take a lot of cleaning if it's to be reused.
Of course, I'll need to paint more, and larger, sheets of cheesecloth if that's going to happen. And I'll need some more container shapes, and does anyone know where one can secure some bath sheet-sized bits of cheesecloth and gallon drums of Vaseline? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
What's happening with you this week? I look forward to hearing about it all.

Great project Win. You can get a 5kg of petroleum jelly on Amazon if that helps. Hugs, Angela xXx
ReplyDeleteThat made me laugh, Angela...I was kidding (maybe? :D) about the gallon of Vaseline. Have a great weekend, my friend.
DeleteYou don't have to pretend to me, you know you want it! xXx
DeleteOh, darn - you know me waaaaaaaaaaay too well. :D xo
DeletexXx
DeleteWin, I had never thought to painting cheesecloth with the acrylic paints remnants. Thank you so much for this great video. As for the stiffener and vaseline, I wish I could tell you but we live in different continents! It sounds very difficult to buy these from Greece! Ha ha! Hugs, my friend.
ReplyDeleteYou're most welcome, Mia; painted cheesecloth gets used so much in my studio (think ties, additions to journals, fragments for tags, backgrounds, etc.) that's it's practically a staple. And I guess I'll have to take a trip to Greece when this is all over just to see what kind of art supplies I can find! :D
DeleteI love your creation ! That green is lush ! Stay safe, my friend !
ReplyDeleteCorrie x
Thanks, Corrie, and thanks again for all your beautiful creations...your posts always lift my spirits!
Deletevery cool Win although I think I would be tempted to use a vegetable can so that I could really use mine as a vase - I have some painted cheesecloth after all!
ReplyDeleteI'll be watching for your vegetable can vessel, Val - and no doubt I'll be testing larger pieces in the future! I suspect you have reams of painted cheesecloth, given that was one of the first techniques in MM I ... :D
DeleteWhat a strong and original idea indeed Winn!
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me some algae stirred by the current of water...
(Stay well my friend :)
Thanks, Sim - I, too, am struck by the organic look of the stiffened cheesecloth, and can see some great possibilities here! Keep safe, and thanks for all your lovely posts!
DeleteThis is lovely, Win. I like the 'tail', as if the greenery is still growing and spreading. The possibilities are endless. I can see the pull of wanting to go bigger :) I suppose you could do without the vaseline if you leave the shaping vessel inside. I guess it depends on what you're using and whether is shows through the cheesecloth.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tracy. It's true that one could leave the vessel inside - that happened accidentally to me when I made a dryer sheet vase. It got royally stuck in spite of being what I thought was thoroughly greased! :D One would definitely want to use a clear glass unless you're going for a colour contrast...something to consider. All the possibilities!
ReplyDeleteWowzer babe you come up with some of the wildest things ever...I don't know who would of thunk this, besides you. And a gallon of Vaseline,
ReplyDeleteI've been working on the same 15oz bottle for 20 years, I'll have to make a couple of these to use it up.
Nothings happening here but art as usual and long term boredom...
Stay safe and don't slip on any Vaseline. love ya.
Oh, Deann, I'm thinking you'd better get on finishing that jar of Vaseline, or I'll come and steal it from you on an around-the-world trip in pursuit of more craziness. :D Perhaps I could make a sliding strip of Vaseline from your place to ours, so we could play together.
ReplyDeleteHappy creating, dear friend - love ya right back, in slippery spades! :D
