When it's cool in the studio...

...one is always tempted to add some heat, and that's what happened with this piece.

Flotsam & Jetsam© Win Dinn 12" x 6"
on cradled wood panel

Intended for the en suite bathroom and painted in three or four shades of blue, this piece had me yawning in boredom until I set it down next to a pile of chopped up painted dryer sheets, leftovers from the snowflake-cutting frenzy earlier in the month.  What synchronicity!

It was only a work of a few moments to slather on some medium and secure some of them to the wood panel next to the sea glass and shells already in place.

I'm loving the joyous results,

and can see this kind of  'happy accident' happening again.

The flashy dryer sheet bits are a perfect foil for the heavily textured blues.

I'd love to hear about your fortuitous happenings - got any to share?

  1. Oh, those pieces really add a pop. It's amazing what a little bit of complementary colour does for a piece. Maybe we should follow that in life - a little bit of chalk to our cheese, as it were.

    1. Agreed, Tracy. One can truly appreciate things only when we're familiar with their opposite number - light vs. dark, rain vs. sunshine, and so on...

  3. Hi Win, you've set me thinking. I have a canvas on the wall near my desk that was a test piece for paint pouring. It was okay but nothing special but maybe I should take it down and give it a makeover. This looks brilliant with all those lovely colours added to it. Thanks for sharing. Big hugs my friend. 4. Fortuity is furtive, and it is difficult for me to give you examples dear Win ... I do not have the reflex to take screenshots when I am immersed in the software. In any case, you, you have the reflex to take pictures, for our greatest happiness !!
This result is spectacular. I really like this bonfire near the water, BRAVO my friend!

    1. What a fabulous phrase, Sim - bonfire near the water. And thanks for the kudos...I know that working digitally is much different than with hands-on tools and techniques (would I had your ability with technology!), so I won't hold you to an example. Thanks for stopping by, dear friend!

  5. I must get my hands on those dryer sheets - I never use those for laundry, but perhaps I should start just for this purpose! Those coloured bits look great against the "boring" blue background. Happy play!

    1. I'm not a fan of dryer sheets for the laundry, either, Zsuzsa, but if you put out a call for used ones on social media, you'll be inundated. They make such great mop-ups for leftover paint (like cheesecloth), and can be used in a TON of ways. Happy sheet hunting; may you bag enough for playtime. :D

  6. First of all let me just tell you how thrilled I was to get your lovely card. It is so cute I'm going to frame it. You are the snowflake wiz they are all perfect.
Then there is this weeks post so beautiful, you just never cease to amaze me with your creativity and generosity. Your picture will look great in your bathroom. Have a wonderful holiday season.

    1. You are most welcome, Deann, and thanks for the comment on 'F & J' :D . I have to agree that it looks great in the bathroom, although now I can see that I'll need to add some similar jazzed-up colour to the dryer sheet curtains to pull it all together (assuming I can actually get in gear on them!). Unending fun, isn't it?!

  7. Βeautiful happy accident, Win! Great creation, my friend. I love your idea of chopping something that you don't like and you use the little pieces onto a completely different creation. Thank you for inspiration, sweetie. Kisses!

    1. That's so true, Corrie...a dear artist friend of mine once told me to keep at a painting until it sings or dies a gory death, and she was so bang on. Bless the ability to gesso over the bad stuff and continue on, I say. :D
