I'm in the throes...

of preparation for an upcoming workshop at TAPS, this time to create a landscape in collage. The challenge is, of course, to find a reference photo that encompasses the beauty of our valley, is visually interesting, and easy enough to translate into a project that is doable for all skill levels and abilities.

I've chosen these three photos in the hopes that one of them will fulfil all requirements.

Creston Valley photo by Jean Henderson

Creston Valley agriculture photo by Brendan Mitchell

The Skimmerhorns, photo by Wendy Franz
So far, I've managed the first, outlining the segments in a Sharpie,

attaching the photo to various bits of painted or printed papers,

and glueing the resultant colouriciousness onto a black cardstock.  The result is lively and visually interesting, although the trees were definitely a fussy cut, challenging to do, and perhaps too much so for some of our participants.

I did have a go at the third photo, but the results were so butt ugly disappointing that I refuse to share it with you.  Perhaps I should add some red cows to it.

In the meantime, I have a stack of some twenty paintings on the worktable,

a design project for a house near Penticton,

and some colour to add to this crackle piece today.

Who has more fun than an artist?  Nobody I know!  What's on your palette this week?  Share a link in the comments below, please, and update us all.

    1. Thanks, Susi, and isn't it true that the busier we are, the happier we feel? It certainly is for me!

  2. You sure manage to keep yourself busy Win. I like the collage piece although I was hoping to see how you would manage the cows in the third photo - lol. You are a woman of many talents from teacher to home design - wow!

    1. Yes, Val - I too would love to see how those red cows might play out, but the thought of cutting them all (to say nothing of the pasting involved) makes me rein myself in! :D

  3. The linear quality of that first photo is stunning but at first I thought "Black and White - WHAT THE HECK?"
Scrolling down I saw what you aimed for in cutting out, and putting back together, the segments of assorted coloured papers. Perhaps this is too difficult for some of your students, but you've made a gorgeous, stand alone work of art there Win!
Is that the feather painting, we started together, that I see at the bottom of the pile of unfinished works? I demand that you put that one at the top of the heap!

  4. Thanks, Alice - I do love how the collage turned out, but suspect I'll need to find something less involved for the group. And DRAT! - I was hoping that you'd not notice the feather painting. Between you and Rochelle egging me on, I may have to finish the darn thing, in spite of my distaste for the job! :D xo

    1. Many thanks, Patty! It's a fun technique, even if they are only about 8 x 12 or so.

  6. Brilliant Win. I love the first photo, it has simple lines and not too much distracting details. I would love to do that as a fabric collage and stitch the trees. Look forward to seeing how it turns out with the group. Best arty wishes, Angela xXx

    1. Thanks, Angela - I agree that the first photo would make a great fabric piece - perhaps you'll do one and show us!!

    1. Thanks, Rose - it's a fun technique and I agree that the contrast between the black and white to colour is a huge one!

  8. Whoa when I saw all those landscape photos I thought I was on the wrong page, but then I remembered that Winn can make something out of anything and I knew it was all good. Great collage ideas I really like the black white and red one it looks very interesting wish I could see it better
What's on my pallet this week? NOTHING!!! AAAH!!! Although I am spending a lot of time praying that when the computer repairman said it would be ready next week...he meant Monday.
I never realized I was such a computer art junkie, it seems everything I do is somehow connected with the computer.

Did you have a great time on your backwoods B.C. vacation? It sounds beautiful.

    1. Laughing at you being 'on the wrong page', Deann...I'll bet you're not the only one who wondered!

I do so hope that your computer is back very early in the week...you must be going crazy without it! Of course it would all be connected in your fabulous work...we'll be waiting with bated breath for you to have it back home, believe me!

I had a great time in the interior, and managed to miss all the fires, although the smoke was prevalent everywhere, as it still is here. Clients are happy, too, so I'm happy as well!

  10. Hi Win Dinn, Your landscape collage is quite beautiful, love the idea. If that is 'your' valley as well, you live in heaven :) Take care xx

    1. Thanks, Shirley - we do live in heaven here. It's a gorgeous and fertile valley filled with orchards, vineyards and mixed farming. What more could anyone wish for? Except maybe where you live in Ontario! :D I hope you are settling in well...sending big hugs.

  11. What a beautiful area you live in! Love the landscape you made. And who wouldn't want to add red cows to anything?
On my desk this week? Well, some art journalling, of course, and a clergy shirt to make, so I'm unpicking an old one at the moment.

    1. It is truly lovely here, Tracy, and thanks for the kudos on the landscape! Certainly the missing one could certainly use something to spruce it up, and red cows would, I think, do the trick. :D

It sounds as though your creative life is as varied as mine, between your fabulous journaling, painting and picking! Happy weekend to you in the land of Auz! xo

    1. Yes we do, Zsuzsa, and if the fires ever let up, we'll be able to see it without the pall of smoke that hangs over it now. That means an even more beautiful panorama. ;-)
