I can be tricked...

...and when I've been out of the studio for a while, I need to be.  So I take this lovely box of scraps

and with eyes closed, choose one.

Once I have my first scrap, I pull a host of others, this time actually using my eyeballs, and start to play with pattern and colour.

Once I create a stamped background and lay all this lusciousness down, I think it will be a great journal spread.  I was amused that I was able to find both parts of the word dream in the bottom left corner, even after someone had chopped it apart.  There is no such thing as an interrupted dream, apparently.

I was on a roll, so I pulled another - this one is such a beautiful accidental landscape that it deserves it's own page, don't you think?

And an oriental spread of red and green feels like a power page - this one will be fun to finish.

Somehow this one has a musical feel to it for me - I'll be interested to see where it goes!

I'd love to hear your tricks for getting back into the studio after a hiatus.  I think there have to be hundreds of them and after these last few months I need to know them all.

  1. Great arrangements, Win. They will really pop when finished. Have fun. I don't think I have any tricks as I rarely have a lengthy break from my studio - lol.

    1. I'm looking forward to playing with them, Val. And of course you are the master a studio time - truly remarkable how you can manage to find the time with all you do!

  2. The things you create with scrapes just boggle my mind, it is amazing your creative gift.
I on the other hand have completed the challenges for this week, and then some. I was BORED until your pictures sparked an idea...if it works out I'll get back to you.

  3. I love the pop of that red and green, and the landscape is just lovely. My only trick at the moment is to open my journal at random and start. It's made of pages with gelli-prints, bits of stencilling, and some stamping, just to give me a bit more interest when the supplies are so limited.

    1. I'm glad that you've got a journal on the go as you wait for your container load to arrive in the UK from Australia, Tracy - you'd go bonkers otherwise. Here's hoping it will be there soon!

  4. I adore what you create this way - a fantastic way to come into the mood of creating and playing! You have the most beautiful scraps - so no wonder that those beautiful pages come into being!
My progress is often the same but I don't have so exclusive scraps boxes at hand - lol!
Happy playing and arting my dear friend!
So glad to have you found in blogland!

I can tell you that I always find a way to bring the muse back- she isn't far away ever--- the best for me are the different challenge themes of my Design Teams... They lead me often to techniques and themes and colours I otherwise would never had chosen! I learn so much with each new challenge- specially my baby "Art Journal Challenge" where the paticipating artist from all over the world inspire me so much-- my days haven't enough ours to try out all the things they show and I am interested and inspired to try out all I see ! That's my wonderful world of inspiration and feeding my muse constantly !
    Happy weekend!

    1. It's marvellous the way that artists inspire themselves, isn't it Susi? Finding inspiration on Design Teams and challenges is a terrific way to encourage the muse, and I love the net for the wonderful work I find daily - yours most definitely included!

    1. Thanks, Shirley...that's all the constant Gelli printing and wonderful swaps. ;-) And we're cold, grey and dreary here, as well, and longing for spring. Hope it arrives on both our doorsteps soon! xo

  6. Such a lovely box of scraps! I would never have thought to just take one and design around it - you are always soooo inspiring Win - thank you. All three of your "future" palettes are splendid. I can't wait to see them after you play. And yes... the landscape is awesome... I would love to put it on a canvas and begin using paint all around it!!! Hoping you are having "lookers" at your home. Xj.

    1. Thanks, Joi, and you're right about that box of scraps - so totally inspiring. We are having great success with viewings, so I'm sure that a move is just around the corner, thanks!

  7. Lovely collage play, Win! I like the idea of choosing the starting piece randomly and building the page around it! The "accidental" landscape is brilliant indeed! I always get out my gelli plate to get back into action - or just start smudging paint around on a page or tag and use all the scraps I find lying on my desk - indiscriminately! If I find myself thinking or wondering, I just stick down whatever is in my hand and move on. I always remind myself that I don't have to share it if I don't like it, so I don't feel pressured to produce anything amazing. Wishing you a great weekend! xx

    1. Thanks, Zsuzsa; it's a fun way of shaking the muse, isn't it? I'm with you on the Gelli plate as well; it's something that can generate hours of creative energy (and so much collage fodder, too :D ). I like your eye-dea of cleaning scraps from your desk to start a page, and the 'no holds barred' would certainly stop the inner critic. Thanks for the tip! Happy days, good friend!

  9. Hi Win, you've given me an idea to get me back on track when I get home and also to use up all that collection of scrap papers. Jackie is right you are always such an inspiration and my family will be so pleased if I empty some of those folders of scraps that I just can't throw away Lol! Sending big hugs and wishing you a very creative week, Angela xXx
