Castlegar...

is a small city about an hour and a half away in the 'Koots' (short for Kootenays, the area I inhabit here in southeastern British Columbia).  Each year they host a Sculpture Walk which brings in wonderful sculptures from around the world.  Sponsored by local businesses, these sculptures are in place from spring onwards, and are a true feast for the eyes.  This past Saturday, my daughter Rochelle and I did a road trip to enjoy them.

WARNING:  this post is photo heavy!!  You'll find a photo or two of the sculpture, followed by one of the plaque giving details.

Rochelle susses out the maple seed - we were both intrigued by the lines and negative space in this one.

Son Barry would LOVE this one.

One of my favourites - I am always going to love this sculptress and her works.

I am forever fascinated by three things - texture, rust and shadows, and this sculpture has them all!

I had to drool over the texture and colour in this...I'm a sucker for purple and copper at any time!

I encourage you to check out the first link above;  had I included all the sculptures I'd hit the limit and beyond on this post.  Watch for a future post on the 2016 winner of the People's Choice Award - it was a doozy!

I'm wondering what goes on sculpturally in your area,  Is sculpture a big thing? And do you sculpt yourself?  If so, you know the drill - comment with a link to your work if you have it!

    1. It was a beautiful day, one of the rare ones without the smoke of the wildfires we've had this summer. It was a treat on all counts, Angela.

  7. Just LOVE that maple seed. We have quite a lot of sculpture exhibitions in this area, and a sculpture trail through the city. We picked up a couple of pieces in the last 18 months - a mantis and an echidna, both by local artists.

On another subject, the turquoise filigree you were wondering about in my art journal is a wide washi tape. I love it as it is easy to embed into the background.

    1. The maple seed is totally intriguing, and so very organic in spite of the steel construction. I love that you're picking up the organic pieces as well.

I did wonder about the washi tape - I've not seen any that wide, and it's lovely!

  8. Wow these are very cool how lucky to be able to enjoy them. I adore other peoples artwork and am really blessed to live in a place where the arts are important in the community. I only wish they would realize how important art is in our schools. It is always and afterthought because of lack of funding. Anyway thanks for sharing your bounty with us.
I am still sans a computer so far this week but my husband is kind to share his so I try not to take advantage. Have a great and creative week my friend.

    1. I feel fortunate to have this excellent sculpture walk so close by; like you I feel like public art and art in schools is a necessity! It seems that lack of funding is a common problem in the US and Canada for the arts.

I'm most grateful that your husband is willing to share his computer while yours is being repaired - please give him an extra hug for me! xo

    1. That made me laugh, Jackie - she was considering whether to choose it for her 'People's Choice' ballot and it was a tough decision! :D It was a fabulous show, and yesterday's trip to Nelson, BC gave me an opportunity to follow up on the participants in that city - just as good! xo
