Because it's hot 'out there'...

...I've been holed up in the basement.  Coincidentally, that's where my studio is. Hmmmmmmmmmm...I wonder if there is a correlation?!  At any rate, I've been experimenting with design and abstract painting: ALL of those experiments are totally deadly, and if I showed them to you I've no doubt that you, too, would be underwhelmed.

I have been having fun photographing the pieces, however, cropping and experimenting with my camera.  I love colour and texture so much that it's hard to even pretend I'm working.  That being said, I thought you'd enjoy some of these photos:

This is a fragment of crackle paste on black gessoed paper.

This small piece is part of  experimental piece with Pebeo products, started in a
play session with Lynne Mizera.  She dripped and I coloured.  What a team!

This is texture paste on a canvas, overpainted with acrylic inks and elan!

From a JumpStart session, I just recently found this piece of mark-marking on board, overpainted with white.
Luckily I'd started five others and could do some more experimenting on them as well.

Crackle paste on black gesso, 'painted' with alcohol inks.

A heavily layered portion of a 12 x 12 panel.

A section of leaf printing gone wild.
What's got you fascinated in the studio lately?  Are you inspired by the weather, or fighting it in your area?  I'd love to hear in the comments below, as always, feel free to add a link to your blog if you'd like to share.

    1. Truth be told, Susi, sometimes the sneak peaks are the only parts of experimentation that I enjoy - and maybe all you'll see! :D That's truly the way of experimentation, isn't it?!

  2. What luxurious mixing of colors. To beat the heat, I get plain air painting early in the day.

    1. Thanks, Eileen - I think your plein air painting early in the day is the best way to beat the heat, especially if one's home is not air conditioned. The valley is such a lovely place in the early mornings now!

  5. Lovely little segments, Win. I assume that the full pieces didn't make you happy - cut and paste, crop and reduce! You know what I have been up to but maybe others might be interested - here is my blog link - http://mellowoodgallery.blogspot.ca/

    1. Thanks, Val. While some of the full pieces are good starts, I've got a long way to go before I'm skilled at abstraction. In the meantime, I'll have a great time playing!

    1. Thanks, Roz - I, too, have been playing with fluid acrylics after years of using heavy body only (and thinning when required). It's very freeing to drip and throw, isn't it?! :D

  9. Well this batch of pictures has got me really inspired...so many ideas spring from each one. The second one made me laugh it looks like an egg in technicolor it would be very interesting. You have some real beauties here. I can hardly wait to try them out.

  10. Oh wow - these are just AWESOME Win. My favorites are the last two - the 12x12 panel and the wild leaf painting. BUT... the Pebeo one reminded me a a visit to our chicken coop on a HOT day - eheheheh!!! Plus I love the tree/vine on the black gesso/crackle/ink. But ALL are just intriguing. Such incredible colors but then... that's what I have always loved best about your artwork Win - the colors!!! Xj.

    1. Ah, Joi, you'll enjoy Deann's comment just about yours, then-egg in technicolour! Thanks for the colour kudos - you're a queen there yourself, you know!

  11. Ooh, yummy! I'm glad I'm not the only one who becomes obsessed with tiny parts of a single piece, just loving how the colours blend or pop. The crackle is glorious, and I love the second one where the paint seems to pool on the surface.

As for being inspired by the weather - my inspiration is to put on another layer! And that means clothes as well as paint.

    1. A fellow addict - hurray! I can get lost in a square inch of beautiful colour and/or texture, and it's amazing how many square inches there are in this studio. Smiling at you putting on layers - clothing and paint - in your wintry Australia, as we bake in our summer sun. Isn't it an amazing world?!

  12. Abstract experimentation is always so much fun! These are so colourful and textured and that second one is especially delicious looking. Fun stuff! I can't say I'm inspired by the weather. Where I am, it's hot and muggy and my art space is up in our loft (3rd floor!). LOL. The A/C doesn't reach up here.

    1. Agreed, Sal - I just love experimentation no matter the form. Hot and muggy, sans air conditioning, does NOT sound fun, especially given your loft location. Wishing you cool, cool, cool! :D

  15. All the texture and colour of these pieces are simply delicious. Having said that I am smitten with the piece having the least colour ... leaf printing gone wild! What's élan?

    1. The leaf print is definitely in your favourite colour range, Alice - little wonder you like it! Elan means dash and/or impetuous ardor; it's the way YOU paint all the time! xo

  16. Love it all Win but the Pebeo products are to die for they are so different and behave in such unusual ways. Have a great time playing with your goodies, Angela xXx

    1. Agreed, Angela - Pebeo has a most unusual line, and I LOVE the intensity of the Vitrail colour!!! xo

  17. Ooooh, these look great, Win! I've always had a soft spot for close-ups. Sometimes little parts of an artwork are more satisfying than the whole! I get frustrated when people post tiny photos of their art online - and all I want to do is to get in closer and see the details! Loving all these detail shots!

    1. I agree, Zsuzsa...I'm a sucker for the macro shots. I'm in awe of those photographers who capture cellular structures - the organic forms just make me quiver!
